How do the adult sessions on Thursdays work?

The Thursday evening session is the main opportunity for adult kayaking in PSKC. We meet at 6.30pm every Thursday at the boat yard from end of March when the clocks change right up to end of September or even early October. We generally finish about 8.30-9pm. Occasionally we cancel a session due to bad weather.

These session try to meet a number of members requirements:

  • beginners coached sessions. These depend on having good weather conditions and also having one of our qualified or experienced coaches to run it and be responsible for the safety of attendees. Winds should be no more than 10 mph and not offshore.  All of our coaches are volunteers so we cannot commit to running beginners sessions every week. We try to have at least one per month and will publicise this on the website as an event. We can take a maximum of 6 people in a coached session.
  • more advanced coached sessions. This is for people with more experience who are no longer beginners who want to develop their skills. This also relies on having a coach available to be so we cannot commit to this every week. We will aim to have one per month for a maximum of 6 people.
  • peer paddles. These sessions are not necessarily led by a qualified coach or leader, so participants need to make a judgement for themselves whether to attend. This depends on weather conditions and also who else is in the group. It is expected that all participants have a reasonable level of experience and know what to do if they capsize or anyone else capsizes.  All participants are responsible for their own and each other’s safety. Club kayaks can only be used by members with suitable experience so please check with Lorna or Richard before participating using a club kayak.

The aim is to have a peer paddle every week, though this depends on who turns up and a coached session at least twice a month. Some weeks there will be a coached session and a peer paddle, in which case the coached session will always take priority over club kayaks. There are 13 club kayaks available for use by members.

Keep an look out on the website for coaching session events or contact Richard on rhope@pskc.org.uk for more information.
